City of Blackwell to demolish list of houses; explores 2025 projects and beyond
December 11, 2024
The City of Blackwell is ending the 2024 year with a list of projects that will be moving ahead into 2025.
In a detailed report from City Manager Wieland and Blackwell’s Chief Financial Officer Russ Meacham, the City has seen exceptional growth since 2021 including Kay Electric’s new building, the remodeling of the Shepherd’s convenience store on Main, the new Farmer’s building, Walmart’s $3 million dollar remodel, the Blackwell High School’s renovation, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s sidewalk and Main Street work, the City of Blackwell’s LED conversion and stoplight removal, the 13th Street resurfacing, the City’s $11 million water plant retrofitting which is set to be completed by SUmmer 2026, the $3.2 million automated water meter project set to be implemented in early-2025, 42 blocks of new waterlines and resurfaced streets, Fire Station 2, Huston School’s demolition, and 650 acres annexed for industrial use.
Moving into 2025, the City is looking at more new waterlines and resurfacing projects on 6th Street from Ferguson to Doolin; Chrysler from McClung Trail to Main; and Lincoln from 8th Street to 3rd Street.
In 2025-2026 8th Street from Doolin to Ash Street (½ mile) and 44th Street 350 feet from Doolin are projected to be resurfaced with waterlines from Blackwell and C to Blackwell and F STreet.
In 2026-2027, the City is projected to resurface 9th Street from Doolin to Chestnut (1.2 mile), the 100 block of E Ikerd and 100 block of Memory Lane (¼ mile) as well as waterlines on 1st Street from Doolin to Ferguson.
In 2027-2028 1st Street from Doolin to Ferguson is expected to be resurfaced with waterlines worked on from C Street to E Street along College.
In 2028-2029 the City is looking to resurface A Street from Doolin to Lawrence and redo the waterlines there as well.
The funds for these projects will be coming from the agreement reached earlier this year with the Blackwell Public Trust.
Other developments for the near future include Stride Bank’s new building on Doolin, the migration of City Hall to the former Main Street Stride, the P.D. migration to the CIty Hal building, Grand Mental Health’s new $3.2 million facility, Parkside School being the new Fire Training Center for city, state, and federal entities, and a Splash Pad for Legion Park.
The City of Blackwell is also hard at work on using the BPT money to facilitate the demolition of an estimated 200 dilapidated structures.
These structures so-far include 613 Peckham, 221 E. Oklahoma, 402 E. Santa Fe, 206 W. Dewey, 224 E McKinley, 526 W. Oklahoma, 315 W. Oklahoma, 413 Peckham, 523 N. Main, 321 W. Padon, 601 W. Santa Fe, 701 E. Bridge, 110 S. F, 701 E. Blackwell, 622 N. 1st, 621 N. Main, and 3128 S. 17th.
